Linksys EA4500 App-Enabled N900 Dual-Band Wireless-N Router with Gigabit and USBThe Cisco/LinkSys EA4500 Router is a good and fast router. However, before you purchase this or any Wireless-N router, first check your laptop to see if it has the ability to connect via the Wireless-N protocol.Open your Control Panel, then "Network and Sharing Center", then click on "Change Adapter Settings".You're not going to change any settings, but this will let you look at the protocols hard-wired into your laptop's mother board.Under the "Device Name" column (in Windows 7), you should see something like "WiFi Adapter" with "802.11" and some letter(s).Those letters (a,b,g,n) are the wireless protocol(s) your laptop computer is capable of.Reason I bring this up is because my HP DV7 laptop has ONLY WiFi 802.11-b and -g capability.I've been experiencing MANY "dropped" connections, and it was traced to this lack of WiFi-N in my laptop computer. In comparison, my son has an HP DV6 laptop, with WiFi-N, and he has had no dropped connections, and he has only very fast internet and network speeds. (Good router, nice router!)To remedy this, I will be purchasing the LinkSys WPC600N CardBus WiFi-N adapter to accomplish this N- connectivity.(If you do the same, be sure to first disable the internal WiFi adapter on your laptop motherboard via your computer BIOS setup (before you even get to Windows).I am very pleased with Cisco's Tech Support. You get a human, they are kind, they are American! (even those with some accent.)They will even call you back if you lose phone connection. I repeat, they are American, and the speak clear English! The Cisco/LinkSys EA4500 WiFi-N Router is an excellent, 5-star product, which I highly recommend, and I recommend it both because of its inherent quality and speed and because of Cisco's tech support system.Oh, and as far as initial setup, it's a breeze. Very simple, and if you use a thumb drive to set up other computers, it's even easier.Instant connection with two hard-wired (and old, tired) desktop PCs running Windows XP Pro (SP3), five laptops, a Droid X cell phone, and a hard-wired HP LaserJet M1212nf network printer. The only problem I had was trying to connect an unsupported Epson Stylus RX680 InkJet printer to the Router's USB.Cisco has a utility to remotely control your computer for troubleshooting, but this did not work on either of my (XP) desktop computers.Since I cannot get this printer to work as a USB network printer, back to a USB on one of the desktops it will go, no great loss, it's not my default printer anyway. The only downside I see to anything regarding this Router is that the Admin password can be seen on any computer by running their CiscoConnect utility program. There is, however, an option to hide the password's characters. Use this option. One final thing I just found, and this is important. There is a user-replaceable WiFi card in HP's laptops. My DV7-1451nr has the Atheros 5007 WiFi adapter, which only does WiFi-G, and it will be replaced by HP Parts Store Item# 630703-001, for less than $40.Check out possibilities like this, and you won't have a USB permanently sticking out the side of your computer.I will say again, though, Cisco/LinkSys support is excellent, and they follow-up on conversations like I've had with them.
