I had originally set my sights on the i5 variant because my old Qotom box was a 7th gen i5, but quickly realized that this isn't yesteryear's CPU in here, it's a current Alder Lake, for a bare bones PFSense in a home environment, i5's too much. This is as well, but it provides me the choice to add virtualization with Proxmox or ESXI... without using too much energy or needing an internal fan. Right now PFSense is on bare metal and yea it barely moves the needle.. cpu usage like 2~5%. I've got VLANs on all the ethernet ports and am running Snort and PFBlocker and this thing barely notices the workload even when I run several speed tests at once online. The case gets quite warm which is a good thing, that means the heat is transferring from the CPU to the case so that it can dissipate. So far quite happy with it.Update: Learned about using Intel SpeedShift instead of the older SpeedStep, I discovered that this BIOS didn't have the SpeedShift settings enabled or visible. A user on Serve the Home forums made a modded BIOS that exposes those settings, so disabled SpeedStep and enabled SpeedShift using tunables in PFSense. The CPU ramps up as needed and down to between 300-400mhz, and the temps are now in the 28c-30c at idle and don't go beyond the 40s under load. The AC adapter I got with mine is only 120v 5A and I thought that was too low, so bought a 120v 8A one. While the brand is 'Hunsn' it says CWWK on the boot screen and appears to be the same as their 6 nic model.
